The U14s travelled to Weymouth for the 5th round of the Dorset Junior Tournament. However, with a few injuries and other commitments to team players (rugby, cadets,…) we actually only had 4 players, and although we asked nicely Alex and James Tsang to be able to play, they were still deemed 6 weeks too old! So the boys battled on; a man short for the whole day with no subs, whilst the other teams had squads of 10! Michael Osita and Harry Midgley, along with Raul Mladin (of Harewood) and Jack Cato (Twynham) put in valiant efforts, easily beating Dorset Storm1, 32-6 before drawing with Weymouth Giants, 18-18, and then putting on a show to beat the Storm2, 54-18. And when Weymouth only just beat Storm in the final game, points differential meant the Seahawks walked away winners. Although Harry was man of the match leading the team as captain and top scorer, Michael also receives a certificate for his amazing efforts in only his 3rd basketball matches.
The U17s started with an easy win over Storm1 26-14, although made a bit of a meal of an easier game, but soon settled into scoring and running as they should. In the grudge match against Weymouth, where we had gotten the close win by 2 at the last tournament, it was another close affair. We battled back from a strong Weymouth start, to take the lead with 5 mins to go, but the Tropics stole it in the last minute to finish 33-32 and take the honours for the day. In the final match, the Seahawks struggled against Tobias Strongman (traitor) and his Storm2 team. But some solid play from Kian Safaee in the last few minutes saw us grab the win 22-21 and finish 2nd of 4 on the day. Man of the Tournament was Boris Petrov, who was unstoppable against all opponents, at both the offensive and defensive ends. The next tournament and final round is at BCS on March 3rd.
