Seahawks hosted the BG Suns in an amazing Cup fixture on Monday night. The team have been working hard on improving set plays, ball movement and moving off the ball. And it showed. Although we started slow, we adapted to the 1-3-1 Zone D and came from 0-7 down to take the lead mid Q and go toe-to-toe with a much improved BG Suns team since we faced them back at the beginning of October when we opened our account.
The game went back and forth, and the lead was never more than 7 for either team, as we traded baskets. The Suns were forced to outside shots by good solid defence but were scoring them on some hot shooting. But we always replied: Yera playing the diamond perfectly, Boris going Beastmode and Nathan and Vito driving and cutting hard to keep us in touch. It was a 3 point deficit at the half... however we knew we could have had the lead with some better free-throw shooting as we were getting to the line a lot on solid drives, but failing to convert to points from the stripe.
The second half was much of the same. Suns took a small lead, Seahawks replied. Shawn adding a sweet 3 to his tally, but Suns replied with some shooting of their own. It came down to the last minutes with myself hitting a game tying baseline jumper, then Nathan hitting a game tying 3 from the elbow. Vito adding another And-1 on a drive to tie the game before Yera getting a sweet interception pass from our new press "Emma" and going Coast to Coast and getting the And-1 to put us up. However they replied to make it 60-60 and then won if from the free-throw line to ice the game, when we couldn't find the last shot.
It was easily the best we have played as a team, the ball moving well, the right shots being taken, the defence forcing outside shots, the press D getting turnovers, the last minutes of solid play calling and making the right decisions, but it just wasn't our night... again.
Another amazing turn out from the boarders had the sidelines jumping and getting brilliantly involved and having us play our best basketball, it just wasn't to be.
